I'm developing this site for my own personal pleasure. If you would like to email for links, etc please do so.
First developed an interest in soul music in the mid sixties after early influences of Cliff Richard, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, etc.
Club Memories
Right at the beginning (1965-67) - Brighouse Youth Centre (Yorkshire, U.K.) at the age of 10 or 11!! - everyone was older than me and I shouldn't have really been allowed in!

- Otis Redding & Carla Thomas - Tramp
- Otis - Try A Little Tenderness
- Four Tops - Baby I Need Your Lovin'
- Bob & Earl - Harlem Shuffle
- Donnie Elbert - Little Piece Of Leather
- Marvin & Tammi - Two Can Have A Party
and many more

- Stevie Wonder - Uptight
- Drifters - Saturday Night At The Movies
- Jimmy Radcliffe - Long After Tonight Is All Over

The Crown, Brighouse
Not a club or disco but the local pub with the added attraction of Huddersfield Town legend, Don McEvoy, as landlord and a superb juke box with loads of Northern Soul e.g.
- Don Thomas - Come On Train
- Sam Dees - Lonley For You Baby
- Barbara Mills - Queen Of Fools
- Hoagy Lands - The Next In Line
- Contours - Baby Hit & Run
I would love to hear from anyone who used to frequent these places twenty or thirty years ago.
Married Julie in 1976 and moved to Hull where she was at university and treasurer of the Hull University Soul Club. Had the pleasure of seeing Heatwave at the University Union just as they broke nationally. Wide range of across the board soul played.
Compiled and presented the Humberside Soul Survey on BBC Radio Humberside 1979-80.
Continued to collect both modern and classic soul throughout the 80's and 90's. Tend to buy 50% modern, 50% northern CD collections these days.
Dee-jay work - I enjoy doing the occasional deejay work and am quite happy to do it for expenses only. You'll get a professional attitude and be rewarded with an interesting set designed to both please and pleasantly surprise the punters. In other words, my policy is don't play all the same old tired sounds but don't clear the dancefloor. You can email me or ring me on 01204 697845. I'm based in Horwich, Lancashire.
O'Jays
Not really aware of them until Backstabbers but then quickly got into their
older stuff through two re-issues at the time:
"In Philadelphia" which contained "One Night Affair", "Looky Looky" and
"Deeper"
A Bell re-issue entitled "O'Jays Live" which I'm pretty sure are studio
recordings with audience appluase inserted between the tracks - most odd.
Included are gems such "I Dig You Act"
Recording Highlights
Obviously, the Backstabbers album, but the follow up "Ship Ahoy" is even
better. Less commercial, but the genius of Gamble & Huff really goes to
town.
The Family Reunion album is also superb with the magnificent "Stairway to
Heaven" (not to be confused with Led Zeppelin - this is full length deep
soul at its very best) which is followed by the full length version of "I
Love Music"
Any track written by Bunny Sigler can be relied upon to ooze soul making
"Sunshine" possibly my favourite O'Jays track of all time.
Bobby Womack
Relatively late at getting into Womack. I can remember ummin' and aaring
back in 1973 whether to buy his then latest album "Looking For A Love
Again". Well I did and that was the start of regularly acquiring Womack
releases
Millie Jackson
From her self titled first album on Mojo (UK) through probably the best back to back albums ever released, namely "Caught Up" and "Still Caught Up" and continuing well into the eighties although of late not heard anything worthy of her glory days.
Chi-Lites
Some of their material may be a bit syrupy but Eugene Record is one of the standout composers of the the last thirty years. Favourite tracks:
- Coldest Days Of My Life
- Just Two Teenage Kids
- Too Late To Turn Back Now
- Oh Girl
- Living In the Footsteps Of Another Man
