Frank Elson - Checkin' It Out
(from Blues and Soul 171, October 14th, 1975)

Hello, Good Evening and Welcome (to be read in a fair imitation of David Frost's voice). I'm feeling in an extremely weird mood just now so be warned... in Elson's column any thing can happen... Stoppit madam . . .

Samantha's Sheffield . . .

No it's not the AII-nighter. . . it's the regular Wednesday night wing-ding, known as the poor man's answer to the Upper Warley Darby and Joan annual disco and neuro-surgery festival (revived). Told you I was m a silly mood dint eye?

So there was Bob Mills and myself bombing over the Snake Pass in what can only be described as a full-scale gale. We couldn't get Radio Hallam on the steam radio but we did pick up Radio Caroline which shows that we, as usual, were all at sea! Most of you must know that John Vincent is the architect, builder, and brickie's labourer of Samantha's by now and most of you have been up on either the old Friday Soul Scene, the All-nighters (once a fortnight I think) or the Wednesday night hoedown.

In view of the respect with which Samantha's is viewed I was surprised that there weren't more people at the club that Wednesday but like I say the weather wasn't any thing to do with September, more like the middle of January, without the Snow. For those of you who don't know, Sam's is part of a complex (Mecca owned I think) including another disco and skating rink. You go up lots of stairs and pay yer money and then go up some more stairs and park your coat. (Or cloak, sorry Count). You then go into a room that is longer than it is wide with a bar right down the far end (expressly built that way so that as you walk towards it John Vincent can greet you with his usual cheery wave and comment "I'll 'ave half ". The dancefloor is adequate but I'd extend it myself if I was in charge (If I owned Mecca I doubt if I'd care to be honestly) and there's plenty of seating area as well.

John Vincent, veteran of three world wars is well enough known through his work at Wigan Casino (no, not on the cloakroom!) and his Northern Soul Roadshow appearances to need no introduction from me. Or perhaps... oh well... go on then... Dear Reader, ple
